Partnership with Shenzhen Middle School creates sister school relationship
A new sister school partnership has emerged between Bayside Secondary School and Shenzhen Middle School in Shenzhen, China. Under the arrangement, students and teachers from these schools will have opportunities to experience cultural and academic exchanges, and attend summer and winter camps. In addition, the agreement will open the door to more students entering the International Student Program (ISP) full-time from Mainland China.

In July 2004, a group of 10 teachers and principals from Shenzhen, China visited Belleville searching for a sister school in Canada. The school officials were introduced to this Board’s ISP through a China trade officer. Following a tour of Bayside Secondary School, the delegation suggested a sister school partnership with Bayside Secondary, and in turn, an invitation was extended by Shenzhen Middle School to Board officials to visit the Shenzhen facilities this fall to look at ways both parties could benefit. As a result of the return visit, the sister school partnership was initiated.

Chair of the Board Judy Edgar is encouraged by the arrangement, saying, “As a Board, we are enthusiastic about with this partnership. It will offer our students and staff opportunities to study or work in China, and give them a chance to become immersed in the culture and academics of that country. With a reciprocal arrangement, we anticipate seeing more students from Mainland China apply to our International Student Program and attend one of the Board’s secondary schools.”

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 54 schools serving 18,900 students and employing 1,083 teachers. The Board covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south, and Quinte West to the west.
