Queen’s U program plants SEEDS of enrichment for inquiring learners
Tomorrow, 200 Grade 7 and 8 students from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will get an early start at university. They’re participating in the Seven-Eight Enrichment Day Studies (SEEDS) program at Queen’s University in Kingston.

SEEDS is a three-day program for motivated learners. It is offered twice during the school year: once in the fall and again in the spring. During the three days, students will study one track of courses consisting of three modules. Topics range from the universe to musical theatre, fine art, business, space, geology, robotics, criminology, sports, psychology, journalism and pathology.

“The SEEDS program is a remarkable opportunity for these students. Many of them are involved in the Gifted Enrichment Project and this program will provide them with challenging enrichment activities in their areas of interest,” explains Nikki Roy, enrichment teacher and SEEDS co-ordinator.

Over the three days, students will experience the university environment and engage in higher level learning. They will interact with new peers of like ability and interests. This opportunity will encourage students to pursue new ideas, think toward the future and become facilitators in their own learning.

Students from 19 schools across our district are involved. Another 100 students will be attending the spring sessions.

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 54 schools serving 18,700 students, employing 1,067 teachers and 775 support staff. The Board covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south, and Quinte West to the west.
