Students
learn what it is like to work in a newsroom
This fall, Grade 7
and 8 students in the Gifted/Enrichment Program at Park Dale Public School learned
what it is like to work in a newsroom. They recently published an eight-page
tabloid style newspaper, The Panther Pulse, that was distributed to
4,000 households in the school’s neighbourhood on Friday, December 20th,
as an insert in The Intelligencer.
“This was the major project for this term,” says Angela Bailey, Teacher Editor. “We created a newsroom-style environment and tried to make it as much like a real newsroom as possible to provide an authentic learning environment for the students,” she adds.
The students were in charge of writing, editing, selling advertising space and photo-editing, covering every aspect of publishing a newspaper. They used QuarkExpress graphic design software, which is the same product used by The Intelligencer.
“We plan to publish two more issues in the new year, one in March and another later in the spring, and hope to expand the number of pages and feature articles,” remarks Ms. Bailey.
