School Board continues to be optimistic that a settlement will be reached
The Board believes the last offer made to its elementary teachers is a good offer and exceeds, in percentage increase, what has already been accepted by secondary school teachers in this jurisdiction. The differences in the positions of the two parties are not believed to be insurmountable and, through negotiations which the Board hopes will be reinstituted in the very near future, will result in agreement between the Board and its elementary school teachers.

The Board values its relationship with its teachers and recognizes their dedication in ensuring an excellent education is provided to all of its students. “We have a history of good relations with our teachers and believe the relationship is still strong,” say Chris Salt, Superintendent of Operations/Human Resources.

However, the Board is concerned that negotiations are being hampered by the poor relationship that exists with the current local Executive. This does not represent a change from past years and is of great concern to this Board.

To ensure that all teachers have accurate information on the last offer made by the Board, a copy of the most recent offer has been posted on bulletin boards at all work locations.

“Our hope is that there is a good turn-out for the vote this evening, and that those attending go with a clear understanding of the true issues,” adds Mr. Salt.

The school Board’s negotiating team will be available to resume negotiations following the vote and will make every effort to bring about an agreement that is acceptable to both parties.

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 54 schools serving over 18,900 students and employing 1,083 teachers. The 2002-2003 operating budget is $133.9 million.
