Tri-Board Transportation Authority Announced

Effective January 1, 2002 the Limestone District School Board, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board and the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will be forming a new Tri-Board Transportation Authority.  The new Authority will provide common administration of student transportation services to all three boards within a geographical area in excess of 15,000 square kilometers covering the counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Hastings, and Prince Edward.  The new regional transportation authority will transport approximately 39,000 students daily and will cover one of the largest geographic regions in the Province.
Trustees of all three school boards have approved the formation of the new regional consortium which will serve students using one fully integrated transportation system on a "one road/one bus" approach to transportation.  All three Boards believe that the move to a regional transportation authority  is another example of the initiatives taken by local school boards to participate as equals in cooperative projects which will provide enhanced services to students while at the same time saving taxpayers money.
The administrations of the three boards agree that the establishment of one integrated transportation system to provide all student transportation services collectively for all three boards will help to achieve greater efficiencies of day to day management, route design, computerization, training, and administrative costs.  As a result of the similarities that exist in the participating boards' operations, for example common walking distances and a common school year calendar, the transition to a larger regional consortium will be accomplished with minimal disruption.
Both the Limestone DSB and the Hastings and Prince Edward DSB have been operating as two separate consortiums with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic DSB.  The Education Improvement Commission (E.I.C.) cited partnerships of this nature as an example of the "best of effective practices".  The newly expanded Tri-Board Regional Transportation Authority is a continuance of this best practice.
