Food for Learning starts kids off right
March is National Nutrition
Month and the Food for Learning program is encouraging area schools to
celebrate through good nutrition. The Food for Learning program has provided
schools in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board with information
on the Veggies and Fruits awards program of Breakfast for Learning, Canadian
Living Foundation.
"The theme for this year's
Nutrition Month is the ABC's of healthy eating," says Loretta Corbeil,
Nutrition Co-ordinator with the Food for Learning Program. " ABC stands
for antioxidants, B vitamins, and calcium - three beneficial nutrients
found in fruits and vegetables."
The Veggies and Fruits awards
program challenges students involved in nutrition programs to eat five
servings of fruits and vegetables each day for a week. Students who make
this choice for healthy eating then qualify for prizes and rewards through
Breakfast for Learning, Canadian Living Foundation.
The Food for Learning Committee,
with the support of its dedicated community partners and volunteers, co-ordinates
36 school-based nutrition programs serving approximately 3,500 students
per day. The Committee is committed to ensuring that students are well
nourished and ready to learn.
