It's "Mission Possible" for teachers
This Friday teachers are
heading to school to learn more about work. Teachers of co-operative education,
guidance, and technology with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School
Board are taking part in a professional development event, called "Mission
Possible".
Two facilitators from Toronto
Catholic District School Board, Carlos Sousa and Tish Amico, are delivering
the full day workshop at Quinte Secondary School. The focus is on an examination
of the attitudes and perceptions that people have about different types
of work. As well, current labour market trends and job opportunities will
be discussed and participants will be invited to outline strategies for
addressing current and future labour shortages with appropriately trained
and available skilled workers.
"There is a role for educators
to assist in raising the level of public awareness regarding current labour
market trends and local job opportunities," says Carolyn Ketcheson, co-ordinator
of the event. She indicates the importance of this awareness so that students
have up to date information in order to make more informed educational
and career decisions.
"A good first step is to
make sure that teachers have access to this important information so that
they can support our young people in making appropriate selections," said
Ketcheson. "Friday will be an excellent opportunity for our teachers to
discuss these issues with some members of our local college and business
communities."
Mission Possible is jointly
sponsored by the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, Loyalist
College, and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. It runs
from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm on Friday, November 23 in the Library at Quinte
Secondary School on College Street West. Additional representatives from
local business and economic development corporations, career agencies and
training boards have also been invited to take part in the full day event.
