Take Our Kids to Work
On Wednesday, November 7,
close to 1,000 Grade 9 students from the Hastings and Prince Edward District
School Board will be off to work. It's Take Our Kids to Work day for these
schools so students will join their parents or adult friends at work for
the day.
Take Our Kids to Work is
a national program with participation and support from all provinces and
territories. Over the past seven years, more than one million students
and 75,000 workplaces have participated in Take Our Kids to Work.
The Hastings and Prince
Edward District School Board recognizes the educational value of the program
and has incorporated the recommendations of the Expert Safety Panel of
the Learning Partnership to strengthen the health and safety aspects of
the program for students. This year about 1,000 students from the Hastings
and Prince Edward District School Board have the opportunity to explore
career options through first hand observation at a work sites.
"Students look forward to
Take Our Kids to Work Day," says Carolyn Ketcheson, Curriculum Co-ordinator
with the Board. "They are enthusiastic about participating in an event
which promotes their involvement in the workplace."
This year, all schools are
working very closely with students and families to ensure the safety of
all placements. Parents were encouraged to be involved in finding an appropriate
placement where they could ensure the safety of their child. Permission
forms for students participating in Take Our Kids to Work Day also highlighted
the importance of parent involvement in preparing their child for the workplace
setting. Students who will not be participating in Take Our Kids to Work
Day will be provided with regular school programming at their schools.
As in the past, this program
is supported by many local businesses, service clubs, and chambers of commerce.
