Board to focus on moving forward
The board results of last
spring’s Grades 3 and 6 provincial assessments, which are administered
by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), were made public
today. The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has announced
that the Grade 3 results are generally consistent with the provincial results.
While Grade 6 results have improved slightly over last year they remain
below those of the province.
The Grade 6 results in Reading
and Mathematics show some improvement over the previous year while Grade
3 Writing and Mathematics also continue to improve.
In Reading, 53% of the Grade
3 students who participated in the assessment achieved at Level 3 (the
provincial standard) and above, the same as the provincial average.
At Grade 6, 50% of the students who participated achieved at Level 3 and
above, up from 47% the previous year, as compared to 57% provincially.
In Writing, 52% of the Grade
3 students achieved the provincial standard and above, a slight increase
over the 51% of last year, as compared to the provincial results of
55%. Forty-five percent of the Grade 6 students achieved at Level 3 and
above as compared to 54% provincially.
Sixty-four percent of the
Grade 3 students who participated in the Mathematics portion of the assessment
achieved the provincial standard and above, up from 60% last year. That
percentage is the same as the provincial average for Grade 3 students.
In Grade 6, 49% achieved at Level 3 and above, up 2% from last year, in
comparison to 56% provincially.
“The focus of the Board
is on moving forward,” said Audrey Carter, Chair of the Hastings and Prince
Edward District School Board. “The Board and schools are in the process
of reviewing the results carefully in order to identify areas to target
for improvement and to develop plans to address those areas.”
EQAO, in its Provincial
Report which is available on its website at www.eqao.com, has made general
recommendations for partners in the education community as well as specific
recommendations for Reading, Writing and Mathematics . The Board supports
those general recommendations and will be using the specific recommendations
to support schools as they continue to implement classroom programs which
meet the learning needs of students.
A full report will be made
to the Board at its November 26th meeting.
