Elementary teachers head "back to school" for Summer Institutes
Forty-five elementary school teachers
from across Ontario are heading back to school in Trenton. This is the
third year for the Summer Institutes offered through the cooperation of
the local Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario and the Hastings and
Prince Edward District School Board.
"Mathematics Connections in the Junior Grades"
provides teachers with a variety of techniques to integrate mathematics
into other areas of study. Activities can then be planned which are meaningful
for students and provide a deeper understanding of mathematics. Teachers
will work with colleagues who teach the same grades to plan activities
for the upcoming year.
In "Weaving Literacy Across the Curriculum"
participants explore a comprehensive literacy program focussing on reading
and writing experiences across the curriculum. Teachers will take an integrated
approach to developing literacy skills in many subject areas and look at
strategies and tools for the assessment and evaluation of those skills.
The courses in Trenton are two of 115 Summer
Institutes offered across the province for elementary teachers to enhance
their teaching skills. They are voluntary programs, which have been developed
by teachers, for teachers. The Ministry of Education is a partner in the
project, providing $1.75 million in province-wide financial support. The
Institutes are also supported by the Ontario Teachers' Federation, and
the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association.
The Summer Institutes are running the week
of July 31 to August 3 (inclusive) from 8:30am to 2:00pm at Prince Charles
Public School, 138 Dufferin Avenue, Trenton.
