Bayside Secondary School
offers a snap shot of life
For a group of senior students
at Bayside Secondary School life is captured in black and white. Photography
was added to the arts offerings at Bayside Secondary School last year and
has been a popular choice with students.
The Grade 11 course gives
students a visual art credit and the ability to specialize in photography
for their OAC art course. The course combines a practical approach to photography
with an independent study unit where students do research into historical
and contemporary photography.
"The focus is on art," says
teacher, Susan Milne. "Students use the film as an artistic medium to express
themselves."
For the hands-on learning, students work with a manual 35mm camera,
learning the technical aspects of photography as well as the artistic side.
Photo composition and subject matter are aimed at fine art approach to
developing aesthetic judgement. Students don't just shoot the film, they
also develop it and print it in the two room darkroom at the school. They
are encouraged to experiment with their techniques for different effects
and learn how to colour tint the images. A few students have even done
practical work placements with a local professional photographer.
