How to apply to HPEDSB?

Teacher candidates interested in applying to the HPEDSB must apply on-line through Apply to Education.

What are the conditions of employment for HPEDSB?

Provision of an acceptable vulnerable sector check which may be obtained from the local detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police or the City Police Department for the area in which you reside, as well as good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.

Is training provided for new teachers?

Newly hired teachers are offered the opportunity to participate in the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) funded through the Ministry of Education.

This is typically held in August prior to the beginning of the new school year. Orientation is provided in the areas of curriculum services, planning resources, special education services, and policies and procedures.

Participation is mandatory for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) and Behaviour Management System (BMS) training.

Does HPEDSB offer a benefits package?

HPEDSB offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes extended health, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, and a pension plan. There is an Employee Life & Health Trust (ELHT) to provide benefits to teachers in the area of Extended Health, Dental and Life Insurance.A Long Term Disability Plan and Teachers’ Pension Plan are also provided. The benefits administrator will review the package with you.

Will I receive a copy of the collective agreement when I sign my contract?

Yes, when you come in to sign your contract, a Human Resources Services representative will review the appropriate collective agreement with you and answer your questions. Collective agreements are located on the HPEDSB website under Board Information. Salary information is listed within each respective agreement.

How is my membership paid with the Ontario College of Teachers?

Each January the annual amount owing to the College for contract teachers and long-term occasional teachers who are active at that time will be deducted from your pay. Daily occasional teachers are required to pay their annual fees directly to the College. This deduction will show as a deduction on your pay stub.

Must I be in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers prior to teaching in a classroom?

Yes, it is a legislated mandate in the province of Ontario to be certified and in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.

What is the starting salary for secondary teachers?

Salary is dependent on the number of years teaching experience you bring with you from another school board. It is also dependent on your certification rating from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).

New graduates are required to apply to OSSTF for evaluation. When you receive your certification rating from OSSTF, forward it to Human Resources Support Services for appropriate salary placement.

How many teachers do you anticipate hiring for September?

Enrolment drives staffing, therefore, once all internal processes have been completed and projected enrolments confirmed, our process allows for the placement of external staff.

What are the conditions of employment?

All employees are required to provide an acceptable criminal record check which may be obtained from the local detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police or the municipal police service where you reside. In addition, you may be required to provide copies of any relevant qualifications for your confidential personnel file (i.e. Secondary School Graduation Diploma, college diploma, university degree, etc.)

When can I expect to see an advertisement recruiting for educational assistants and how do I apply?

Student enrolment drives our staffing requirements, therefore, once projected enrolments are confirmed a decision can be made regarding recruitment. In previous years, advertisements have run during the months of July and/or August.

How do I become an employee with HPEDSB?

When you see an advertisement in your local newspaper or on the HPEDSB website that is of interest to you, submit a complete resume package (as per instructions in the recruitment advertisement) to the Human Resources Officer, Support Staff for review and consideration.

What is the minimum education required to become a:

  • Custodian – high school graduation diploma
  • Office Assistant – one-year college certificate for general office procedures and computer skills
  • Secretary – two-year college diploma for clerical organization and management skills (i.e. Business Administration)
  • Library Technician – two-year college diploma in a related capacity (i.e. Library Information Technician)
  • Student Supervision Monitor – one-year college certificate for clerical skills
  • Educational Assistant – college diploma in a related capacity (i.e. Social Service Worker, Developmental
    Service Worker, Educational Assistant)

What is the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC)?

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) is an independent oversight body. It’s role is to uphold and promote open government and the protection of personal privacy in Ontario. Individuals have a right to request that decisions on access to information requests made to the school board under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), be reviewed by the IPC.

How do I make a formal request under MFIPPA?

You may make a request by completing a request form (pdf). Completed forms must include a $5 application fee paid by cash or cheque payable to Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. Your request should provide as much detail as possible about the information you are requesting and be sent to the attention of the freedom of information officer.

How do I access general information?

General information about programs and services and contact information is posted on the board website. For access to more specific information, please contact Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board at 613-966-1170 or 1-800-263-4350. You will be directed to the department responsible for the records you are seeking. The appropriate department staff will determine if the records will be provided as a routine disclosure or if you should submit a request formally under MFIPPA.

How do I get a copy of my high school transcript?

Transcripts are provided by the school you attended. A list of schools and contact information is online. A small fee may be charged for this service; the school representative will confirm the amount.

NOTE: Transcripts for students who attended Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational Institute are provided by Quinte Adult Education.

Please be aware that the availability of transcripts may be limited during the summer months due to vacation schedules at secondary schools. Transcripts cannot be produced at the Education Centre, they must come from the school.

How do I access my/my child’s personal information?

Parents/guardians of students under age 18 can request access to information held by the school board by contacting the principal of the school their child attends or last attended. Please be aware that while an individual has access to their own personal information and general records, they do not have a right to access personal information about another individual. Staff must comply with the Municipal Freedom of Information Protection Act and the Education Act and will provide you with the information you request only if you are legally entitled to receive it. Students who are over age 18 may request copies of their records without parental consent.

How does HPEDSB collect and use personal student information?

Personal student information is collected directly from parents, guardians or students under the authority of the Education Act. Information collected will be used in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act:

  1. for planning and delivering educational programs and services or for consistent purposes;
  2. by board employees who need access to the information in order to do their job;
  3. to comply with legislation or law enforcement; and/or
  4. in compelling circumstances affecting health or safety (with appropriate notice).

Notification of the collection and use of student information is indicated on the student registration form and updated annually through the student information form. Personal information collected and used for any other purpose requires consent of the parent, guardian or adult student.

What is personal information?

Personal information means any recorded information about an identifiable person including but not limited to race, nationality or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, education, medical, background, identifying number or symbol, address, telephone number, and personal views or opinions.

What is Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)?

CASL is Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation which came into effect July 1, 2014. Its purpose is to minimize receipt of unsolicited electronic messages, whether in the form of email, text messages, social media or other means of telecommunication, that are sent for commercial reasons. It is also intended to reduce electronic threats to commerce, including phishing, pharming, malware and spyware.

CASL prohibits the sending of a commercial electronic message (CEM) that promotes or encourages participation in a commercial activity unless specific requirements are met. This means that anyone who sends a CEM must do the following:

  • obtain consent from the recipient first;
  • provide prescribed identification to the recipient: and
  • provide an unsubscribe option on the outgoing message.

Why comply with CASL?

Individuals and organizations found to be in violation of CASL could face significant fines. Everyone must ensure they have done their due diligence to prevent a violation.

Does this include schools?

Yes, because schools often send out electronic newsletters with invitations to special school events like concerts, barbecues, fundraisers, etc.

What does this mean for parents and guardians?

We want to keep parents and guardians informed about what’s happening at schools across the district. Email and other electronic messages are often the best ways to stay in touch. These communications may include information about offers, advertisements or promotions related to school activities such as fundraisers, field trip opportunities, student photos, lunch programs or similar school related activities. If your child’s school has practices in place to communicate with you electronically, please ensure that you have signed and returned a CASL consent form to your child’s school in order to continue to receive these types of communications. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting the school principal.

What does this mean for HPEDSB?

Schools, school councils, student councils, trustees and employees must comply with CASL if they send CEMs that encourage participation in a commercial activity. Seeking consent is crucial. School board strategies and mechanisms to ensure compliance are being developed and implemented.

What are examples of school board CEMs?

School board CEMs may include the following:

  • messages to parents, guardians and community members with promotions, advertising or offers of sale such as school pictures, yearbooks, team uniforms or equipment, prom tickets, food programs such as pizza days, field trips and fund raising activities;
  • school newsletters that contain messaging about these types of activities;
  • promotion of community and local business events when they include promotions or offers for sale;
  • emails that redirect the recipient to another website, and forwarded emails that contain commercial content;
  • messages, e-newsletters and advertisements for general interest courses, business partnerships and request for proposals;
  • emails regarding non-board business such as an invitation to sponsor a colleague or offer an item for sale.

Electronic messages that are not of a commercial nature, but are simply for informational purposes (i.e. student progress, notice of a community or school council meeting) do not fall under CASL. Hard copy communications such as newsletters, flyers and letters, faxes and voice messages, even if they contain commercial content, are exempt from the legislation.

What is a commercial activity?

A commercial activity refers to a transaction that is of commercial nature, whether or not there is expectation of profit. A commercial activity includes an offer to purchase, sell or lease products or goods.

Extended French

Why consider Extended French?

Extended French is an effective method of learning another language. Students in Extended French programs communicate in the target language while maintaining fluency in their first language.

Is Extended French for any child?

Extended French is open to any student starting Grade 5. A successful Extended French student generally demonstrates the following characteristics:

  • Expresses themselves well
  • Has strong skills in their first language
  • Enjoys language activities
  • Has a good memory
  • Is confident
  • Enjoys new challenges
  • Has strong study habits

To find out about your child’s suitability for the program, you may wish to contact your child’s current teacher or the school administrator of the Extended French school in your area. Presently Extended French is offered at York River Public School in Bancroft.

How do I find out more about Extended French?
Parents who want to know more about the program are encouraged to contact York River Public School.

Will my child’s English skills be affected?
Research shows that bilingual children are flexible thinkers and effective problem solvers with a well- developed sense of language. Second language education significantly strengthens first language skills in areas of reading, vocabulary, grammar and communication skills.

Is student transportation available?
No, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to transport their child to/from school.

How can I support my child even if I don’t speak French?
Parents of Extended French students may have few or no French language skills but can support their child in a variety of ways. To support your child in Extended French:

  • Promote effective study habits
  • Provide a structured learning environment for homework
  • Have your child explain homework and share what he/she has learned
  • Invest in a good French/English dictionary and a book of verbs
  • Make French books available in the home
  • Expose your child to French outside of school through the arts and French cultural events in the community
  • Consider taking a French course for adults
  • Contact Canadian Parents for French for more information

As in any classroom, program support is provided through differentiated instruction. However, more intensive support using Special Education resources is not available in French.

French Immersion

Why enrol your child in French Immersion?

Immersion is the most effective method of learning another language. Graduates of Immersion programs are able to communicate comfortably in the target language, while maintaining fluency in their first language.

Students enrolled in French Immersion experience the following:

  • Enrich their educational experiences and promote personal growth
  • Increase their understanding of other people and other cultures
  • Develop their communication and thinking skills
  • Gain access to a larger pool of information
  • Enhance career opportunities in Canada and the global community

French Immersion offers students the opportunity to become functionally bilingual in French. The content is the same as the regular program but the language of instruction is French. The entry point is at the beginning of September in Grade 4. Students who successfully complete the French Immersion program to the end of secondary school are eligible to receive the Board French Immersion Certificate.

French Immersion is currently offered at the following schools:

How do I apply for Summer School?

Contact your Guidance teacher at your school.

What is the cost of Summer School?

There is no fee as long as you are a resident of Ontario.

When do online courses begin?

Details on course dates and expectations will be sent to your student apps email account.

How often do I need to log into my course?

Students are required to log in daily and complete assigned work. Students need to dedicate at least six hours a day to course material.

Can I withdraw from a course?

You can withdraw from a course during the first nine days.

How can I get help/support on a course?

You can contact your teacher and eLearning coordinator from the registration email.

When are report cards sent out?

Report cards are mailed home during the month of August.

Do I have to attend an exam?

All exams and culminating activities for HPEDSB courses are completed online.

What happens if I’m taking a non-HPEDSB course during the summer?

You are required to follow the dates and expectations set out by that school board.

Do I need an exam proctor?

For non-HPEDSB courses, you may be required to find an exam proctor.

How do I volunteer at my child’s or local school?

Parents/guardians and community members are welcome as volunteers in schools. They can provide valued support to students and the school staff.

The principal is responsible for determining the volunteering needs for the school and overseeing the selection process. Volunteers will be asked to provide references and also required to provide an acceptable criminal background check before being approved.
