Youth Forum to address dangerous teen trends

Information is often difficult to find until it is too late

The Student Senate is preparing to host the annual Youth Forum for secondary school students. This year’s focus is dangerous teen trends, which include substance use, domestic violence and bullying. This event is taking place during the province-wide Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, November 15 to 19, 2010. Numerous other activities will be taking place at Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board elementary and secondary schools.

The Youth Forum is a one-day event for student leaders. A student planning committee has organized seminars and working sessions that will foster self-reflection, peer interaction and discussion leading to solution planning. The committee believes that by being aware of the conditions and challenges facing others, students can often provide support and encouragement to people who need it. Although the numbers of students directly involved in any number of dangerous teen trends may be few, the friends, siblings, and peers of those directly involved are many.

"The Youth Forum is a way for student leaders to come together to share ideas about fostering change at their school. They will learn how to encourage positive behaviour, and investigate a variety of ways to motivate their peers and friends to take action to make a difference," said Pearl Hucul, Curriculum Coordinator who helped students coordinate this event.

The Youth Forum is planned by a sub-committee of the Student Senate. The Student Senate consists of 16 students, with two representatives from each secondary school. Through involvement on the Student Senate, students experience leadership opportunities outside the classroom.
