Youth exchange paired Bayside SS and Stoney Nakoda First Nation students

Bayside Secondary School students had an experience of a lifetime when they visited an Aboriginal community in Alberta and then hosted their new friends back at home.

In mid-May, 18 students travelled to Morley, Alberta with teachers Jennifer Davis and John Reid. The excursion was in partnership with the YMCA Youth Exchange and Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

While the Bayside students were in Alberta, they stayed at the Canadian Alpine Club hostel. When the Morley students came here, they were billeted with the Bayside students.

During the local visit, the students participated in activities and events to acquaint them with local culture. They were greeted upon arrival at Bayside Secondary School with a potluck supper and introductions. A full-week of activities was planned, including trips to the Petroglyphs, Toronto, Ottawa, O’Hara’s Mill, Canadian Forces Base Trenton, several organic farms, as well as swimming at Trenton and a variety of school events, including an assembly featuring traditional Stoney Nakoda First Nation drumming and dancing.
