Students at Centre Hastings Secondary School in Mr. Ripley’s Managing Personal and Family Resources class learned about time management and tolerance in a unique way.
Each student in the class was challenged to spend one full school day from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in a wheelchair. The students were not allowed to leave the wheelchair at any point during the day, except for washroom breaks.
By learning about the time conflicts that special needs can create in a person’s schedule, the object was for the students to discover that they take time for granted, to learn that they should appreciate the time that they have, and manage it more effectively. In addition, the students experienced challenges that some people face every day and learned to become more tolerant of the differences of others.
On a grander scale, not only did this experiment affect those enrolled in the course, but it is also affected students throughout the school. It helped build character development by encouraging Centurions to give consideration to the thoughts and actions of others; treating others as we would want to be treated ourselves.
The wheelchair experiment was a success and may be tested with future students in the Managing Personal and Family Resources class at Centre Hastings Secondary School.
