Two Green Apple School Program grants for North Hastings HS

Congratulations to North Hastings High School, recipient of two Green Apple School Program grants of $1,000 each! Applications were submitted by teachers Colleen Drew-Baehre and Carl Ziebarth, for a brook trout stream survey and a sustainable forest management project. Both will be completed by students in the Northern Environmental Research and Development Studies during second semester.

North Hastings High School is in an area that is largely forested by mixed hardwoods. Many of our students live on forested properties or will be forest landowners someday.

Through this project, students will:

North Hastings High School offers two Specialist High Skills Majors, one in Forestry and one in Environment, where students learn the principles of forestry, resource management and environmental studies. The students acquire the skills, certifications and knowledge to gain employment in forestry and resource-based careers or to pursue post-secondary programs in these areas. NHHS also offers numerous Cooperative Education opportunities including the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Each program promotes valuable hands-on work experiences for all levels of learners.

The Green Apple School Program, sponsored by Metro Inc., provides grants to schools which actively participate in environmental stewardship.
