Two educators announced for 2011 Educator of the Year Award

The following is posted on behalf of the Education Week Committee.

Congratulations to Dorothy Lazore and Sherry Procunier of Quinte Mohawk School, selected as co-recipients of the 2011 Educator of the Year Award! They will be presented with the award at a ceremony during Education Week next week.

Lazore and Procunier teach the Mohawk Language Program at Quinte Mohawk School, a program they have developed together—from the ground up—over the past 20 years. Lazore has also taught at Moira Secondary School, making it possible for Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board to be the only school board in this region to offer a consistent Mohawk Language program for well over a decade.

“Dorothy and Sherry have been instrumental in revitalizing the Mohawk Language to its respected priority at Quinte Mohawk School and in the community at large,” said Kathleen Manderville, Principal, Quinte Mohawk School.

Beyond their daily teaching duties, Lazore and Procunier have contributed greatly to the writing team for the Ministry of Education curriculum document for Native Language. They have developed materials for instruction. They volunteer their time to speak at community gatherings to ensure the Mohawk Language is an integral part of the spirit of the event. They have integrated the latest technology available within their classrooms to assist with reading, writing and speaking the language. They also developed and offered adult night classes to parents and the community as they recognized that students would retain the language if they had someone to speak it with at home.

“Their passion for excellence is what sets them apart. It is their dedication to the survival of a culture that fuels this passion. I know as a student of theirs that I felt this passion and fed off it as I dedicated myself to learning the language,” commented former student, Lindsay Brumwell, who contributed to the nomination.

In the history of this award there has only been one other year when two educators were recipients. In 1995 the committee could not decide on one recipient so chose two.

The Educator of the Year Committee has been celebrating outstanding educators in Hastings County and Prince Edward County since 1967. Sir Mackenzie Bowell was prominently known for being Canada’s fifth prime minister (1894-1896). He was an advocate for education in Hastings County. Prior to serving in parliament, he was elected and served as the chairperson for the Belleville Board of Education from 1856-1867. It is in the spirit of his great work and support of education that we honour an outstanding educator every year.
