Trenton High, Apple Canada partner for literacy with iPods
It is not uncommon to see students listening to iPods in high schools. But what is different in this situation is what is on their iPods.
Students at Trenton High School had an opportunity to take part in an pilot project with Apple Canada. Apple loaned the school a MacBook and a pair of iPod Touches to experiment with delivering course content and other materials in a dynamic and engaging manner.
The timing of the project was ideal since students were in the process of preparing for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. The literacy team at the school decided to repackage their support materials, which previously had only been available in print format, as video podcasts. The podcasts included a slideshow packaged with an audio track. The podcasts were posted on the school website where students could download them to their computers, iPods or other portable video devices.
During practice session for the literacy test students were encouraged to view, pause and replay the videos to ensure that their work met all of the requirements.
Students who were involved endorsed the use of digital technology in the classroom.
Grade 10 student, Tamara Johnson, said, "Learning with iPods made things more interesting."
The literacy team would like to thank Matt Norton, (Senior Information and Technology Services Officer, and and Gary Shillington, Computer Network Technologist, for making this project possible.
