Teamwork remains the focus of re-elected chair and vice-chair

Board members continue to focus on student achievement and safe schools

Congratulations to Carl Pitman and Mary Hall who were re-elected as chair and vice-chair, respectively, at the annual meeting of Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board this evening.

Pitman has been a school board trustee for Centre Hastings for 12 years. He has been school board chair for the past three years, making this his fourth term. Pitman has also served as vice-chair and has been an active member of the Program and Human Resources, Executive, and Suspension Appeals committees.

In his acceptance remarks, Pitman referred to HPEDSB as a school board of character and stated, "Our schools continue to provide safe and supportive learning and working environments. Academic and support staff are dedicated to ensuring that students receive the best education possible."

He added, “Thank you for placing trust in me as Board chair. I look forward to leading this team for the next year. On behalf of myself and my colleagues I want to express gratitude to all staff members who work tirelessly for the benefit of students."

Belleville/Thurlow trustee Mary Hall was re-elected as vice-chair. Hall has been a trustee with HPEDSB for 15 years. During that time she has been an active member of the Special Education Advisory, Program and Human Resources, Suspension Appeals, and SALEP (Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils) committees, has served as the Board’s representative on the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association since 2000, and has acted as Student Senate advisor.

“I appreciate the opportunity to continue working with my fellow trustees, administration, other board staff and parents/guardians to enable our students to achieve success and reach their goals,” remarked Hall.

Elections for chair and vice-chair take place each year at the annual meeting. At the same meeting, trustee membership on various committees for the upcoming year is approved. Standing and legislated committees are: Operations and Finance, Program and Human Resources, Executive, Special Education Advisory, Student Discipline Committee, Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils, and representation on the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association.

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 16,300 students each day at 46 elementary and eight secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of approximately 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
