Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is committed to establishing processes that build healthy relationships, and ensure safe, caring, respectful and inclusive 21st century schools. This includes a focus on developing student leadership opportunities within the context of Gay Straight Alliances (GSA) or Diversity Teams and Safe Schools Teams. This extends to students seeing themselves as contributing citizens to caring, safe, respectful and inclusive classrooms, school and global communities.

The Student Involvement Steering Committee has invited secondary schools to send up to 10 students from both GSA /Diversity Teams and Safe School Teams to participate in the Student Involvement Symposium. The guest speaker will be Elvira Kurt. Elvira, a Toronto native and star of the Comedy Network’s series Popcultured with Elvira Kurt. She has also been voted funniest female comic at the Canadian Comedy Awards. She uses humour to address topics such as inclusivity, homophobia, and women in society.

Participants will network in groups to share how they are creating safe, caring, respectful, and inclusive environments at their schools. Time will also be built into the day for school teams to develop proposed action steps for their own schools.
