Speaker of the Legislative Assembly visited Susanna Moodie Elementary

Students at Susanna Moodie Elementary School were quiet as mice today, Wednesday, April 7, 2010, as they learned about how the Ontario government works.

Special guest Leona Dombrowsky, M.P.P. Prince Edward-Hastings, greeted the Grade 4s and 5s, then introduced the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, The Honourable Steve Peters. Mr. Peters spoke to the children about the Speaker’s role, the parliamentary process, and the Legislative Page Program, which is a chance for students to learn first hand about how government works and how a bill becomes a law. Following the 45-minute presentation, the children asked a variety of questions such as, Do pages get paid and if so, how much? How long is the page program? What does a page do? and Can you take the day off if you are sick?

The Speaker explained that Grade 7 and 8 students are eligible to be pages. Dombrowsky encouraged students to apply at the end of their Grade 6 year, and to not get discouraged if the first application is not accepted. Students can reapply until the December of their Grade 8 year. Approximately 20 to 22 pages are accepted at a time, for a 4-week work period.

Susanna Moodie Elementary School, built in 1980, is located in a rural setting in west-end Belleville and serves approximately 270 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.
