School communities throughout the district are celebrating Canada and sport now that the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics are happening.
In North Hastings, all six elementary schools (Bancroft Public School , Bird’s Creek Public School , Coe Hill School , Hermon Public School , Maynooth Public School  and North Hastings Senior Elementary School ) with close to 800 students, will participate in outdoor winter activities at two locations: Dungannon Recreation Centre and Millennium Park from February 16 to 20, 2010. Activities will include skating, broomball, yoga, speedskating, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and other outdoor games. The goal is for children to have fun and to spark interested in lifelong fitness. Funding was provided by the Ministry of Health Promotion and a partnership between the Town of Bancroft and Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.

Students and staff at Athol Central Public School and South Marysburgh Central School  celebrated with an Olympic assembly on Friday, February 12, 2010. A local torch-bearer was a special guest who carried the Canadian flag into the school.
At Susanna Moodie Elementary School , students are celebrating ‘gold medal’ learning. Children are involved in celebrating two weeks of literacy, arts and physical activities from February 16 to 26, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to – 10:10 a.m. each morning. The school will focus on the fun and spirit of the Olympic games that promotes a love of sport and Olympic excellence, both tied to character education.School staff and students thank The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation for helping to make their Winter Olympic games dreams come true and also to Susanna Moodie School Council for their volunteering and support.
