School board welcomes international students, celebrates diversity

Promoting a culture of inclusion, valuing differences and providing opportunities for all to participate are commitments of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB). The board’s Equity and Diversity Committee has planned a get-together for newcomers to Canada and international students.

MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES ARE INVITED TO ATTEND TO REPORT ON THIS CELEBRATION.

Date: Thursday, October 9, 2008

Time: 6:30 p.m. (reception), 7:00 p.m. (program begins)

Location: The Gallery at the Belleville Public Library

Guest speakers: Kathy Soule, Director of Education; Neil Ellis, Belleville Mayor; and international students

"This event is a way to celebrate diversity in our schools and communities," remarks Kathy Soule, Director of Education. "It is also directly related to three of our system goals: Success for All Students, System of Character and Community Relationships," she adds.

Earlier this year the Equity and Diversity Committee planned to host a fall event to celebrate diversity. Focusing on the district’s international students was an obvious fit. This event will be co-hosted by HPEDSB and United Nations – Quinte Branch.

HPEDSB has 126 international students from 10 different countries including: Russia, Germany, United States, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Mexico and Brazil. The program has been in place since early 2000 and continues to grow each year.

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves more than 16,700 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of close to 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, provide the best opportunity for students to learn. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
