Today the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) released the results of the Primary and Junior (Grade 3 and 6) Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests and the Grade 9 Mathematics test written during the 2007-2008 school year.
Provincial results flat-lined and HPEDSB results mirror the provincial pattern. In Grade 3 Reading, the results were the same as last year, in Writing there was a 2 percent improvement and in Mathematics there was a 2 percent decline. In Grade 6 Reading, there was a 1 percent improvement, in Writing a 3 percent improvement and in Mathematics a 1 percent decline. Grade 9 Mathematics results remain above the provincial average with a drop in the Applied level results and a small increase in the Advanced level results.
“The lack of consistency in results is concerning,” remarks Kathy Soule, Director of Education. “Over the past three years we have put specific resources in place to support instruction and learning in literacy—things like intensive literacy training for teachers and focused resources to support student learning. Further data analysis is required to figure out why there are such extreme fluctuations at the elementary level. We will stay the course by continuing to focus on literacy in all classrooms.”
“We believe in our students’ ability and have confidence in our teachers to help students reach the provincial level. Even so, we are dissatisfied. We have not seen the incremental improvement that will close the gap between our students’ achievement and that of others in the province,” states Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board.
Strategies in place for the 2008-2009 school year
For the 2008-2009 school year HPEDSB elementary schools will have the following common focus areas:
- A comprehensive literacy program in all classrooms designed to help students become independent readers and writers.
- 120 minutes of daily literacy instruction.
- Literacy partners, who are expert teachers in teaching literacy, at all schools.
- Literacy resource rooms consisting of a wide variety of readily available literacy resources for teachers.
- In-depth analysis of achievement data to guide school and classroom instructional practices.
- Events for parents and community members to support the school focus on improving literacy.
Secondary schools continue to guide students to select appropriate program pathways. Ongoing strategies include the following:
- A focus on helping students to make successful transitions from elementary to secondary school.
- Student Success teams at each secondary school. These teams exist to increase the percentage of students who graduate by providing a diverse range of programs and supports which address a variety of learning needs and preferences.
