It is with much sadness that we advise of the passing of Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board, in the early hours of Monday, May 23, 2011 as a result of complications from cancer. Carl fought the illness with immense will over the past few weeks. Medical teams in the ICU, first at Belleville General Hospital and then Kingston General Hospital, gave him around-the-clock care to alleviate his pain and help him to be as comfortable as possible. Family and closest friends were by his side throughout his final hours.
Pitman had served Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board since 1997, when he was first elected as a trustee representing Centre Hastings for Hastings County Board of Education. He was elected as Chair of the Board in December 2006 and continued in that capacity to the present.
Pitman’s leadership and vision led the Board through the development and completion of the first-ever 5-year system plan, known as Achievement in Motion for Student Success or AiM. Under his direction, the second 5-year AiM System Plan is now well underway, continuing to focus on students, employees and parents/community.
Known for his sense of humour, caring approach and responsibility, Pitman was a proud supporter of Growing with Character, the school board approach to character development in children and adults alike.
“He personified the eight attributes of caring, cooperation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness and certainly celebrated the fun in life,” stated Kathy Soule, Director of Education. “Carl was a mentor, a visionary and a leader. He will be truly missed by all who knew him, both professionally and personally.”
Pitman provided long-standing service to the following:
• Executive Committee
• Operations and Finance Committee
• Program and Human Resources Committee
• Special Education Advisory Committee
• Safe Schools Committee
• Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils (SALEP) Committee
• Accessibility Advisory Committee
• Audit Committee
• Marketing Committee
He also served as the HPEDSB representative to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association and, at one time, as the vice-president for the eastern region.
Carl is survived by his wife Barb, son Ron, daughter Tina and her two small children.
All in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board community send deepest sympathy to Carl’s family as they come to terms with their loss.
Vice-chair Mary Hall is working with the director of education and Board members to establish a process to fill the position of trustee for Centre Hastings.
