Returning soldiers appreciated letters from Deseronto PS students
Students at Deseronto Public School experienced a very special community connection recently. They were visited by three Canadian soldiers who they had been communicating with while the troops were in Afghanistan.
During a full-school assembly, Captain Heiler and Corporal Perry showed pictures of their trips to and from Afghanistan, as well as the base and Canada House in Kandahar. They also showed pictures of the letters students had written which, along with student art work, displayed at the base. Grade 5 and 6 students wrote thank you letters, with six students reading them aloud during the assembly.
"The troops’ visit to our school was certainly a highlight for all students. Being able to make a personal connection to a few of the soldiers they had written to was an experience they will remember for a long time," stated Principal Heather Seres.
The troops presented the school with a thank you/recognition plaque which is now on display in the foyer. They also visited each classroom to answer students’ questions about the Afghanistan community, service to Canadians and to those in other countries, and their travels. As a surprise, the troops also presented each student with handmade bracelets.
"We were all so proud that day for the work that our troops do here in Canada and around the world," added Seres.
