Public consultation update for school accommodation reviews

ACCOMMODATION REVIEW OF SCHOOLS IN NORTH HASTINGS
The public consultation process to study the future of schools in North Hastings is winding down. The Accommodation Review Committee (ARC), which consists of school, student, parent, business and municipal representatives, presented its report to school board senior administration on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. At the January 14th ARC meeting, 41 out of 50 voting members were present and participated in the voting process. The committee voted 22 to 19 in favour of recommending the closure of Bancroft Public School with the relocation of students to the current North Hastings Senior Elementary School, creating a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 school. Students from North Hastings Senior Elementary School would move to North Hastings High School, creating a Grade 7 to 12 school. Facility upgrades and renovations would be required at North Hastings Senior Elementary School and North Hastings High School in order to support programs.

Next steps in the North Hastings process

  1. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 – School board senior administration will present its recommendation to the Student Enrolment/School Capacity Committee. The ARC recommendation will be included in the report from senior administration.
  2. Wednesday, April 8, 2009 – Members of the public will have an opportunity to provide final input at a public meeting.
  3. Monday, May 25, 2009 – The final decision will be made at the public Board meeting.

ACCOMMODATION REVIEW OF THREE SCHOOLS IN WEST BELLEVILLE
The public consultation process to study the future of three schools in West Belleville is winding down. The Accommodation Review Committee, which consists of school, student, parent, business and municipal representatives, presented its report to school board senior officials on January 28, 2009. The recommendation is to close Sir Mackenzie Bowell Public School with renewal, renovations and additions at both Prince Charles School (PC) and Sir John A. Macdonald School (SJAM). PC and SJAM would become Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 schools, retaining students within their respective communities. Additions at both schools would include larger gymnasiums, associated change rooms and conversion of existing gymnasiums to library resource centres and computer labs. Renewal needs would be required at both buildings and would include new fire alarm systems, roofing, lighting, windows and heating system modifications.

Next steps in the West Belleville process

  1. Wednesday, February 18, 2009 – School board senior administration will present its recommendation to the Student Enrolment/School Capacity Committee. The ARC recommendation will be included in the report from senior administration.
  2. Monday, March 30, 2009 – Members of the public will have an opportunity to provide final input at a public meeting.
  3. Monday, May 25, 2009 – The final decision will be made at the public Board meeting.
