The boys basketball team at Prince of Wales Public School brought the trophy to the school after almost 20 years.
It was a nail-biter final game between Prince of Wales and the team from Susanna Moodie Elementary School. Both played with skill and determination. The final score was 38-33.
According to teacher and coach Tim Wood, the POW boys were keen to win.
"Our team is very talented. They are self-starters as individuals who bonded and worked as a team every step of the way," remarked Tim Wood.
Early preparation was a big part of the team’s success. Players asked for more practices, and were eager and motivated to improve their skills.
"We are very proud of these boys. They are ambassadors for our school—hard-working, dedicated and disciplined," added Wood.
Throughout the basketball season, POW staff supported the team through weekend tournaments, staff versus student games, attendance at the finals games and acknowledging the team’s achievements.
It was 1984 when POW last won the District Boys Basketball.
Prince of Wales Public School serves approximately 350 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Students in Grades JK to Grade 5 attend nearby Hillcrest School then move to POW for Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Student success, in all areas of education—academics, character development, citizenship, the arts and athletics—is the goal for every student at each site. Prince of Wales offers YMCA before- and after-school and breakfast club programs, and both schools have nutritional snack bins for students who may otherwise go without. Both sites have large school yards with a variety of playground equipment.
Prince of Wales offers specialized classes for students with both cognitive and physical needs. The school also hosts a number of classes to serve students with special needs. Prince of Wales offers both a Primary and Junior/Intermediate program for students with autism, in addition to the class for Primary students with developmental disabilities.
