Moira SS and YMCA to host event for girls

The 3rd annual TLC: Trojan Ladies Connect event is set to be rewarding for spirit, mind, heart and body of high school girls. It is hosted in partnership between Moira Secondary School and the YMCA of Belleville and Quinte.

TLC is a two-day overnight, offsite girls-only retreat aimed at assisting teenage girls as they navigate through issues such as bullying, body image, abusive relationships, healthy eating, self-image and conflict resolution.

Jacquie Waller, Child and Youth Counsellor and Chair of the Moira TLC staff Committee has been involved since the beginning.

"Throughout the two-day retreat, Moira staff, student participants, guest speakers and YMCA staff will attend yoga/zumba sessions, various team building activities and workshops addressing healthy body image and healthy teen relationships," remarked Waller. "It is a powerful event that has positive, lasting effects on each of us."

This year’s keynote speaker is Kate Whitfield, CEO and founder of FearlesslyGIRL, who is on a mission to empower teens, tweens and young women to take action and transform their body image, self esteem and vision for their lives.

David Allen, Regional Director for the YMCA of Belleville and Quinte acknowledges the strong partnership between the school and the YMCA.

"This partnership is a perfect match for the mission, vision and values of the YMCA. For 150 years the YMCA has been dedicated to service to others and to providing opportunities for growth in spirit, mind and body; offering healthy and constructive opportunities for growth. We recognize the need for a program that focuses on young women and providing the tools for empowerment.”

Waller also noted that by partnering with the YMCA, the TLC program will grow and have greater reach to adolescent girls in the community.
