Minister of Education to visit Prince Edward CI

A new student health care clinic will be opening at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute (PECI) and The Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Education, will be in attendance to celebrate with the school community.

DATE: Monday, November 8, 2010
TIME: 10:00 a.m.
LOCATION: Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, 41 Barker Street, Picton

The Proud Panther Health Clinic is a primary care clinic located in the school and run by the Prince Edward Family Health Team. The planning has been a community effort, with support and involvement from Principal Shelley MacKenzie-Coates, and Child and Youth Counsellor Rob Furmidge.

PECI offered free office/clinical space to the Prince Edward Family Health Team (PEFHT), which in turn agreed to provide nurse practitioners and administrative support on-site one day a week. A PEFHT doctor donated a used exam table. PECI students and parent volunteers painted the office and the exam table to match school colours.

Nurse Practitioner De-Ann Sheppard will be providing primary health care to students. Sheppard proposed opening a clinic in the school as a response to two Family Health Team goals: 1) to improve health care services through community partnerships; and 2) to make health care more accessible and relevant to adolescents and young adults in Prince Edward County.

Additional community support has helped to furnish the clinic. Although the space and administrative staff were provided, the clinic needed office equipment and the means to connect to the electronic health record system linking to family physicians, nurse practitioners, specialists and other clinics. The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary provided a generous donation of $5,000 to purchase furnishings and laptops for the clinic.

The primary care clinic will augment other community supports, such as physicians from PEFHT, public health nurses from Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit, and on-site staff from Children’s Mental Health Services of Hastings and Prince Edward.

Prince Edward Collegiate Institute is a community high school located in Picton, Ontario serving over 800 students from across Prince Edward County. With a strong academic program, a wide variety of athletic and extra-curricular activities, and excellent facilities, PECI continues a more than 50-year tradition of preparing students for success in the world.
