Leadership is the focus for the Student Youth Forum 2008

The Student Senate welcomes student leaders to the Youth Forum 2008. This year’s focus is leadership. The goal is to promote positive character development and leadership strategies through student involvement in maintaining, encouraging and developing effective student activities.

"The Youth Forum is a way for student leaders to come together to share ideas about fostering change at their school. They will learn how to encourage positive behaviour, and investigate a variety of ways to motivate their peers and friends to take action to make a difference," states Pearl Hucul, Curriculum Coordinator who helped students coordinate this event.

Workshops

Morning plenary session: North Hastings High School ‘House System’

Break-out sessions: Teamwork, Leadership, Growing with Character, Spirit, Fundraising, Leadership on a Broader Spectrum

Sessions will be hosted by secondary school students. Youth Forum participants include eight representatives from each of the district’s eight secondary schools. During the afternoon planning session, students will have 70 minutes to work in school groups to plan two follow-up activities for their school.

The Youth Forum is planned by the Student Senate. This group of 16 students consists of two representatives from each secondary school. By being involved in the Student Senate, students experience leadership opportunities outside the classroom.

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves more than 16,700 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of close to 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, provide the best opportunity for students to learn. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
