Grade 4s participate in Quinte Children’s Water Festival
An event to enhance children’s awareness of water is the first of its kind in the Quinte area.
The Quinte Children’s Water Festival will be a hands-on educational experience for Grade 4 students. The focus is to enhance children’s attitudes and awareness of the importance of water and their role in its use, consumption and protection. In this pilot year, event organizers are expecting 300 children from Trenton, Frankford and Stirling, along with assistance from 60+ volunteers.
Students will rotate through a series of stations to learn about low-flush toilets, environmental impact on ground water and surface water, and the diversity of water uses in historical and modern times. The Quinte Children’s Water Festival is organized by the following:
- Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board
- 8 Wing Trenton
- Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board
- City of Quinte West
- Environment Canada
- Lower Trent Conservation
- Ministry of Environment
- Quinte Watershed Cleanup
High school students from Bayside Secondary School, Moira Secondary School and Trenton High School were also involved by building stations and activity centres.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, 2009, rain or shine.
