Geoventure students from Moira Secondary School met with Franke James , an award winning author, artist and speaker. Students created artwork that expressed their environmental concerns and shared their art with Franke at a seminar in May.
Franke captivated the students and shared her knowledge about how people can make big changes and positively impact the environment. She believes that changing light bulbs is not enough and that society needs to do something more to impact the environment.
Geoventure teacher, Gayle Miller, invited Franke to attend the seminar after meeting her at a Going Green Workshop that was sponsored by the Ontario Teacher’s Federation. Franke presented at the workshop and inspired Gayle to hold a seminar and have Franke run a workshop for the Geoventure students.
During the workshop, students spent hours researching environmental issues and listening to Franke explain how they can inspire others to be environmentally conscious. The students expressed their ideas on environmental issues by making collages and posters with recycled magazine clippings and various art materials.
The artwork that the students created will be displayed at the Quinte Mall on June 17 and 18. The display at the mall will highlight the Geoventure program and student accomplishments.
