Congratulations to David Reed, 2009 Sir Mackenzie Bowell Educator of the Year
The Education Week Committee is proud to announce this year’s recipient of the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Educator of the Year Award, Mr. David Reed, Teacher, Centennial Secondary School.
Mr. Reed is a music teacher at Centennial and has been inspiring students through the Arts for 10 years. He is the visionary behind the Arts Offstage Program and the Canadian Vocal Music Project. Mr. Reed also coaches the Centennial Chargers football team and is the music director for the school’s well-known Musical Theatre productions. He strives to instill good character and citizenship in all his students. Mr. Reed is described by a past parent as “an inspiring example of the exceptional difference a teacher can make in the lives of his students.”
The Education Week Committee has been celebrating outstanding educators in Hastings and Prince Edward counties since 1967 through the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award. Sir Mackenzie Bowell, who died in 1917, was prominently known for being Canada’s fifth prime minister. Serving from 1894 to 1896, Sir Mackenzie Bowell was an advocate for education in Hastings County. Prior to serving in parliament, he was elected and served as the chairperson for the Belleville Board of Education from 1856 to 1867.
Mr. Reed will be honoured and presented the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award for Educator of the Year at a special reception on Tuesday, May 5 at the Bay of Quinte Country Club, 1830 Old Highway 2, Belleville, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Please note that due to a scheduling issue, the reception has been moved from its original date of Thursday, May 7, 2009.
