Community member gives back to Picton’s Queen Elizabeth School

Students at Queen Elizabeth School in Picton [1] now have another SMART Board to support hands-on, interactive learning, thanks to Paul Van Vlack, a former Scotiabank executive for Eastern Ontario. Van Vlack believes believes in giving back to and supporting Prince Edward County youth.

Mr. Van Vlack’s generous support, a donation of $7,500, has allowed school staff to purchase a SMART Board and additional technology devices to assist with teaching French and literacy skills.

"I have felt for some time that the private sector should play a role in concert with the government in assisting with funding and also in sharing life experiences with our students who will form our next generation. I felt that the SMART Board was an excellent way to teach French. In my day, unless you lived in Quebec, it was very difficult to become even borderline bilingual. The SMART Board attracts students’ attention and curiosity in a very positive way," said Van Vlack.

SMART Boards engage students through hands-on, interactive learning. They are an effective use of technology for teaching all subjects, in particular math and science concepts.

Four generations of Van Vlacks have resided in Prince Edward County, with Paul’s father having attended Queen Elizabeth School and his daughter now teaching there.
