Centennial Secondary School student received an international award and tuition scholarship

Congratulations to Ian Wright, a Centennial Secondary School student who was chosen to perform as part of the Yamaha Allstar Jazz Ensemble at the MusicFest Canada National Festival in Ottawa.

The 38th annual MusicFest Canada was hosted by the National Arts Centre in Ottawa from May 17 to 22, 2010. During the week-long event full of music, learning and fun, MusicFest inspired thousands of young musicians from across Canada.

The Yamaha All-Star Band celebrated its 18th anniversary and featured 20 exceptional young jazz players. The national honour band consisted of successful candidates who gathered for a week of music education and festivity under the direction of Terry Promane from the University of Toronto. Students expanded their musical talent, technique and skill while attending workshops and master classes with top performers. The band performed a full evening concert on Saturday, May 22 at the National Arts Centre.

Ian was one of 29 students to be awarded a Humber College tuition scholarship at the festival. Humber College provides a wide range of tuition scholarships annually to remarkable performers that collaborate at the festival.

Ian was also the 2010 award recipient for the Zildjian Outstanding Drum-set Player Award. Zildjian annually provides several awards to outstanding percussionists totalling over $3,500 in cash and product. Ian was presented with a four-piece set of A Custom cymbals and a box of drumsticks.

MusicFest Canada is an annual national event that brings together over 10,000 of Canada’s finest young musicians. Musicians range from 12 to 25 years of age and are drawn from the elementary, high school, college and university levels. The festival is held each year in may, in a major Canadian city.

MusicFest Canada annually engages the participation of over 450,000 youth in 45 associated festivals nationwide for an opportunity to perform at the national festival. MusicFest provides an opportunity for students and educators to get together and share their musical achievements and ingenuity.
