Career Fair at Madoc Township PS brings community together

Students at Madoc Township Public School are getting excited about an event that will leave them with lasting impressions about their future career choices.

The 2nd Annual Career Fair is scheduled for Friday, May 6, 2011. This event will involve all students as well as student visitors from Coe Hill School. Dozens of presenters will interact with students to explain their career choice, pros and cons of the job, and offer suggestions about how to prepare for specific jobs.

"This was a big event at our school last year and it’s grown even more this year. We are so appreciative to our presenters, volunteers and staff for their contributions and efforts to support the development of our students’ career goal setting," remarked principal Joanne Barry.

The event features a wide variety of presenters, both inside and outside the school, including the following:

  • Cheesemaker
  • Barber
  • Sports therapist for the Montreal Canadians
  • Timber frame builder
  • Representative from Ministry of Natural Resources
  • Planning ecologist from Ministry of Natural Resources
  • Police officers and firefighters
  • Representatives from Hydro One
  • Representatives from Quinte Humane Society
  • A forensics biotechnologist
  • Newspaper, television and radio reporters
  • Small business owners
  • Doctor
  • Veterinarian and veterinary technician
  • Canadian Forces pilot
  • Educators and school board support staff
  • Meteorologist
  • Theatre representative

Research has shown that if students have career goals to work toward, they will see more relevance in their daily studies and have a sense of commitment to their education.

Madoc Township Public School is a rural school located north of the village of Madoc off of Highway #62, serving 140 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school is surrounded by rural fields, farms, shade trees and conservation wetlands. In a welcoming and inclusive environment, students are supported to achieve high academic standards and meet their own personal goals. Individual accomplishments are celebrated on the daily announcements and through formal programs such as the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Award and celebration assemblies. Other celebrations and traditions include full school turkey dinners, Career Fair, Fun Fair/Carnival, craft carousels and holiday concerts. The school slogan “Friendship and Learning!” is celebrated every day in an environment where all have fun and celebrate the HPEDSB character attributes of caring, cooperation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. At Madoc Township the mission is “prepare students to become healthy, responsible, and contributing citizens who can meet the challenges of an ever-changing world!”

Outdoor facilities include a track, a new playground structure built in 2007, a covered picnic shelter, three soccer fields, and one ball diamond. Indoor facilities include a library, a literacy room, a computer lab, a music room, SMART Boards, a well-equipped gymnasium with a stage and a retractable screen for video presentations. The school has seven classrooms, and an Early Learning Program that offers every day/full day kindergarten.

Staff, parents, and community members openly communicate and work together to support student learning and success. .
