Students and staff at Bayside Public School know how to care for others! They recently held events to raise money for cancer and donate hair for wigs.
On Monday, September 14, 2009, 16 people shed their locks for Angel Hair for Kids. “Angel Hair for Kids” is an organization that makes wigs for children, age 19 and under, who have lost their hair due to cancer or other diseases. According to the organization’s website, it is estimated that at least 10,000 children will lose their hair this year because of illnesses.
After the hair cutting, the school community watched a short presentation about Terry Fox to help motivate students to bring in coins for the school’s annual Terry Fox Foundation fundraiser. Over the past four years, Bayside Public School has raised over $8,800! During the week they collected pennies one day, nickels next, dimes next, then quarters and loonies and toonies. All were hoping to break last year’s record of $1,203.
To further show support for cancer patients, students, staff and parents/guardians and family friends volunteered to have a pink hair extension added to their hair.
Besides being a fun week of fundraising, these events demonstrated the Bayside Public School commitment to caring for others!
