78% of students were successful on provincial literacy test
The Grade 10 provincial literacy assessment results decreased for Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) in 2012. Results indicate that 78% of first-time participating HPEDSB students were successful on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), as compared to the provincial average of 82%. This represents a 6% decrease in district results over last year and a 1% decrease for the province.
For 2009, 2010 and 2011, HPEDSB made steady gains, increasing from 76% in 2009 to 84% in 2011. Last year HPEDSB students exceeded the provincial average of 83%. While provincial rates have decreased in the past three years, HPEDSB students made steady growth until this year.
“In light of our steady growth during the past three years, this year’s results are surprising. Secondary school teams have started to analyze their data to plan forward,” stated Trish FitzGibbon, Superintendent of Education, Curriculum Services.
Preliminary analysis indicates that many students just missed being successful on the test. A score of 300 is required. Many HPEDSB students were within 15 points of that score.
“Some students were close to being successful on the test and getting there is within their reach. Knowing where they struggled will help us to improve their skills,” added FitzGibbon.
In order to more fully understand this year’s results, staff will be examining the data as it relates to student pathways, such as Academic, Applied and Locally Developed; gender; and students with special education needs. The data will then be used by school improvement teams for classroom instruction purposes across all subject areas.
“Our students have made steady gains over time. We expect that pattern to continue. We remain committed to providing programs to help each student reach full potential,” concluded FitzGibbon.
