21st Annual Celebration of Dance was a terrific success
The 21st Annual Celebration of Dance, held today, was, by all accounts, a terrific success! The weather was clear and sunny with a slight breeze, the best weather in years!
This year saw 3,000 students participating from 30 schools across the district.
"It’s definitely an awesome sight to see thousands of smiling and active young people, investing in life-long health, as they have fun, dancing and singing," remarked organizer Ian Boyd, curriculum coordinator.
Celebration of Dance began in 1991 as a much smaller event. It quickly grew to its present size and has now spilled over to other school districts in eastern Ontario.
Students and staff collaborated to learn and perfect the following 11 songs and dances:
- All in This Together
- Cha Cha
- Hamster Dance
- All Star
- Crazy Frog/We Like to Party
- Huki Lau
- Move It
- Cotton-Eyed Joe
- Hava Naghila
"There is strong research that physical activity is linked to academic performance. Moderate to vigorous physical activity helps not only to wake up the brain and make it ready for learning, but Dr. Ratey of Harvard has research showing that it actually creates brain connections; called neurogenesis," added Boyd.
Thank you to the following organizations which partnered with the school board to organize a successful event:
- Belleville Police Service
- Bob’s Toilets
- City of Belleville
- Culligan – The Good Water People
- Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board volunteers
- Metro Foods
- Sound crew of Lionel Rae and Rick Scott
- Tri-Board Student Transportation Services
