Celebrating school spirit and leadership were the focus of Grade 9 Activity Day festivities at North Hastings High School on Friday, September 17, 2010.
All Grade 9 students were matched with a senior student through a peer-to-peer—or P2P—mentor process. Some Grade 10 mentors-in-training (M.I.T.s) were also involved in the leadership-building activities that involved approximately 280 students.
"It was fantastic day all around. The weather cooperated and we were outside as planned. The response from the student body was extremely positive. I am very proud of all students and staff who were involved," remarked Principal Ken Dostaler.
Students were divided into four groups representing the school’s four houses: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire. Activities included skill-building and problem-solving tasks, and several team-oriented games.

North Hastings High School (NHHS) is committed to success for all students. Together with community partners, the school provides programs that prepare students for transition to apprenticeship programs, college, university and the workplace. Many NHHS students have earned prestigious scholarships that recognize excellence in academics, extra-curricular and community involvement. NHHS offers unique 4-credit courses that are provincially recognized, including a Specialist High Skills Major in Forestry. Students in that program learn the principles of forestry, resource management and environmental studies, and acquire the skills, certifications, and knowledge to gain employment in forestry and resource-based careers or to pursue post-secondary programs in these areas. NHHS also offers numerous cooperative education opportunities, including the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Each program promotes valuable hands-on work experiences for all levels of learners.
