$12,000 for food programs from Bayside Secondary School

On Friday, May 11, 2012, 150 students at Bayside Secondary School went without food for 24 hours and raised $11,500 for local food banks and the school Food for Learning Program.

Students were the drivers of this community effort.

“We hope to empower other students to make a difference in the lives of people at our school and in our community,” said Meghan Bush, Co-chair of the campaign.

Co-chair Danika Brown added, "Participants in 244h were treated to live music, karaoke, games and movies throughout the night and broke the 24-hour fast at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12."

In 2010, Bayside Secondary School became the first high school in Canada to host the 24-Hours for Hunger Campaign, raising $10,000 to support Gleaners Food Bank, Trenton Care and Share Food Bank, Stirling Community Cupboard and Bayside’s Food for Learning Program. What sets 244h apart from other similar famines is that 100% of the funds raised are used to fight hunger, since the event pays for any expenses through community donations. Similar famines use a percentage of the money raised for administrative costs.

“I am inspired by the students at this school. They are quick to act and will stop at nothing to help others in need,” remarked Emily Young, Bayside Secondary School teacher and 244h supervisor. In the past, BSS students have also organized community events such as Halloween for Hunger, Relay for Life, Christmas Sharing, and numerous toy drives.
