Students from two elementary schools received good news recently. They each received $5,000 for new music instruments.
The funds for music programs at Foxboro Public School and Tyendinaga Public School came from Band-Aid grants, funded through Musicounts. The grants are awarded annually by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) to schools which demonstrate need, commitment to music programs and community involvement.
Foxboro P. S. music teacher, Pekka Tanskanen and Tyendinaga P. S. music teacher, Michael Baker, both run very strong music programs in which students are involved in performing for the public at parades, concerts and community events.
Foxboro Public School serves 310 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. The school is equipped with a computer lab, a large playground, track, library and a music room. The school has a Centre for Learning Disabilities, an Art-After-School program and instrumental music. Weekly celebration assemblies highlight academics, athletics and character education. The school provides a safe and healthy learning environment based on mutual respect and inclusionary practices. Tyendinaga Public School, located in a rural community in the township of Tyendinaga, serves approximately 360 students from Kindergarten through Grade 8. All students at Tyendinaga are bused to and from school.
Tyendinaga Public School strives for a balance of academic, physical/health education and the arts. The school includes a large up-to-date computer lab for use by all students. Physical education and music (vocal/instrumental) programs are available to all students from Grade 1 through 8. The school operates on a balanced school day schedule with three 100-minute blocks of instructional time separated by two 45-minute nutrition breaks. Tyendinaga PS has a very active environmental program, student leadership council, and school council.
