Join in recognizing National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace
Across Canada, National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace is recognized annually on April 28. It is a time to commemorate workers who have been injured or whose lives have been lost through tragic workplace incidents.
At Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, we value all employees and are committed to having safe workplaces. In support of this, the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan includes Well-Being as a priority. The Joint Health & Safety Committee, consisting of management and employee members, is in place to identify conditions that may be a source of danger or hazard to employees and make recommendations to the employer, among other responsibilities.
In support of this employee-centered approach, the Internal Responsibility System is followed at HPEDSB, whereby each employee has responsibility for health and safety as an essential part of his or her job, and therefore is in the best position to identify and solve health and safety issues.
The most recent statistics available are from 2015 and indicate 852 workplace deaths were recorded in Canada. Each worker death impacts the loved ones, families, friends and coworkers they leave behind, changing all of their lives forever. (Source: Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.)
According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, National Day of Mourning was first officially recognized by the federal government in 1991. The Day of Mourning has since spread to other countries. It is hoped that the annual observance of this day will strengthen the resolve to establish safe conditions in the workplace for all.
The Flag at the Education Centre will be flown at half-mast from early in the morning on Friday, April 28 until later that afternoon, to mark National Day of Mourning.
